24-Hour Movement Guidelines

In the field of Kinesiology, some recent research I would like to share is around desirable movement behaviours in response to harmful trends of not engaging in enough physical activity and too much sedentary behaviour. Research by the organization Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) has led to the development of healthy guidelines for the amount of recommended physical activity, sleep, and sedentary movement for different age groups, the newest being for ages 0-4. Providing 24-hour movement guidelines for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers is the first of its kind in the world. Screen time is addressed as this is becoming a new startling issue affecting early child development.

These guidelines were developed by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, the Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group, the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Alberta, the Public Health Agency of Canada, ParticipACTION and a group of leading researchers from Canada and around the world, with input from over 600 national and international stakeholders.

These evidence-informed movement guidelines can provide direction to parents, caregivers, health professionals, and policy-makers on how to achieve the greatest health benefits across the continuum of early years, children and youth, adults, and older adults. Provided below are links to the established Canadian 24-hour Movement Guidelines: An Integration of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, and Sleep for each age group:

These guidelines combine physical activity and sedentary behaviour while including sleep to demonstrate the important interrelationship between all three behaviours. Following these guidelines across our life continuum can optimize health benefits.
