ABOUT ME

Brett Dutra, BScKin,

MHS (in progress)

Stirring Coffee

My name is Brett Dutra, an aspiring leader in Canadian health care. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (BScKin) in June 2014. My undergraduate professional practicum was completed at The Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement – a fitness facility for children and adults experiencing disability or impairment. My role as an Adapted Physical Activity Instructor challenged me to be creative when developing exercise programs to meet the needs of the individual. I have a strong desire to teach meaningful exercise as a tool to improve quality of life.

I currently work as a Therapy Assistant in Home Care, Edmonton Zone with Alberta Health Services (AHS), the single health authority of the entire province of Alberta. Home Care support is included under Alberta's continuing care system and these services are publicly funded. I primarily support Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists to implement individualized rehabilitation treatment programs to clients with chronic disease and complex needs. I thoroughly enjoy collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to provide quality care and optimize health outcomes. It is rewarding to improve and maintain client’s abilities to function safely and independently in their home.

To build upon my professional and academic skills, I became a student once more, starting a Master of Health Studies (MHS) in January 2019 through Athabasca University. My professional interests include health policy analysis, healthy aging, and the advancement of physical literacy. You can find more information on these topics through my shared resources and blog posts. I am confident this graduate program will assist me to grow as an individual and public health ambassador, facilitating health promotion on a greater scale.
